"We get to be trained in other specialties besides our areas of expertise. This is my certificate which I got from a training in finance for non-finance officers." |
"The team is very supportive of each other. The working environment is so nice and everyone is very friendly. I learn a lot every day." |
"After a good long year of work, we get to take time out to review our work and update each other on what we are doing. But we also have some fun in the process." |
Career development
CHAM is flexible and attracts people of varying levels in their career and from varying backgrounds. We take on board people who are commencing their career, graduates, and people transferring from government and private sector.
We also want our people to have the chance to develop within their chosen career and so we actively support personal development and are committed to supporting all our employees to achieve their desired qualifications. There are also many opportunities to learn something outside of one's area of expertise. We engage partners to provide short-term trainings in areas such as Monitoring and Evaluation, general Administration, Finance, Communication, and Project Management. |
Employee involvement
Our employees are passionate about CHAM's work, so we ensure that everyone is updated on developments around CHAM through a weekly meeting for all Secretariat staff.
We are also big on social media as a tool for quick communication and have regular updates on our website. We also issue out a newsletter which keeps everyone up-to-date. Through surveys we get feedback from staff (in a structured and confidential way) about a range of issues including what working with CHAM is like. |
We value our staff
CHAM places great importance on the development and retention of all staff, which is achieved through actively valuing our staff and supporting them to achieve their full potential not only through training but also through work opportunities.
Staff members are actively encouraged to apply for senior posts and to develop their career with CHAM. We have also developed a wide range of employee recognition and retention initiatives and an excellent package of staff benefits. We have a social fund which provides staff with the opportunity to multiply their money and make fantastic savings at the same time. |
Work/life balance
We offer a competitive salary to attract and retain great people.
We recognise that there's more to life than work, so we support you in achieving a work/life balance. We offer flexibility in mode of delivery and encourage employees to discuss their work-plans with their supervisors in order to create a work/life balance. We provide health and life insurance which covers you and leaves your beneficiaries safe and comfortable. |
Social activities
Our employees dedicate their hearts into their work, but they also want to have some time to meet their colleagues and relax.
Our active Staff Social Welfare Committee organises regular social activities for employees including football and volleyball games, bi-annual birthday gatherings, and social gatherings to welcome new employees. |
Work with the best
Work alongside one of the most respected, trusted and recognised brands in Malawi. We have built a brand with strong values, clear goals and a long term ambition.
With our extensive network, we are a nationally and globally recognized institution. We have a huge network of health facilities and colleges which provide unique and excellent quality services. Our partnerships with government and development partners provide you with a window of opportunity to expound your knowledge and skills base. With a wealth of knowledge and experience available, we provide you with the experience of a lifetime. |
CHAM works to empower youth in Malawi with the skills and knowledge to succeed. One of the ways we achieve this goal is through our internship program.
Interns are an integral part of the Secretariat staff, learning and growing as they contribute meaningfully to their departments. Although they are assigned within one department, interns are treated like CHAM staff members - that is, they are welcome to contribute fresh ideas and to participate in projects across departments. CHAM offers paid internships, and interns may be hired as fulltime staff. Interns are given the chance to explore topics that interest them across the Secretariat's diverse work. In recent years, interns have engaged in such diverse work as developing their accounting skills, learning about social media management, helping to establish human resources and research guidelines, managing and analyzing data, building ICT capacity, and more. nterns can work in any of our departments, and can outline but preference is given to applicants who hope to focus their internships on one or more of our Strategic Plan Key Outcome Areas.
Further information about the topic areas can be found in our Strategic Plan section. Applications to the internship program are accepted at all times. Applicants to the internship program should submit a resume, unofficial transcript and cover letter to chamsec@cham.org.mw. This cover letter should explain why you hope to participate in the CHAM internship program, the desired department and topical focus of your internship. If you have a specific idea of activities you would hope to perform within your internship, please also include these expectations. Please direct any questions about the CHAM internship program to chamsec@cham.org.mw. |

Shelbi Flynn
Monitoring and Evaluation fellow (2016/17) |
Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership development and capacity-building program that recruits promising young leaders as "fellows" to work at high impact health and social justice organizations in Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the United States and Zambia.
GHC fellows typically work in pairs, one local and one international fellow, to fill identified gaps within their placement organization. GHC is a community of leaders who share a common belief that health is a human right. The community believes that everyone has a role to play in advancing social justice through the health equity movement and recognize that serious change in global health will only be achieved with the skills, time, and passion of a diverse community. From 2015, CHAM entered into partnership with the Global Health Corps (GHC) with Lillie Reed and Maggie Phiri occupying positions in Communications and Advocacy, and Monitoring and Evaluation respectively. In 2016, Annabelle Gadabu and Shelbi Flynn were paired to continue in these capacities and CHAM now welcomes Dominique Wilson and Dalitso Laviwa who have replaced them for the 2017/18 year. |
Joseph Marwa
Information, Communication, and Technology fellow (2016/17) |
Fredskorpset Norway (FK Norway) is part of Norway's national development policy that facilitates mutual learning and development of institutions and local communities. FK Norway gives financial support to organisations to exchange staff with one another.
Since 2009 CHAM was in a tripartite FK Norway South-South Exchange Program which ended in 2016. The Exchange Program involved CHAM, Christian Health Association of Kenya (CHAK) through St. John's Community Centre (SJCC), and the Churches Health Associations of Zambia (CHAZ). In 2016 CHAM sent Yowati Nthenga, a chartered accountant with Nkhoma Hospital to CHAZ while Gift Ndalumbira an Environmental Health Officer for Mua Catholic Hospital went to SJCC. In return, CHAM received Joseph Marwa, an IT Officer from SJCC and Beau Chilongo, a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer from CHAZ. The FK Norway program is under evaluation to draw lessons for improvement. As such, there will be no exchange program in the 2017/18 year. |
